SoCo Sings on SoCo!
Right after our community performance at the Central Austin Library, we’re heading back to our roots down on South Congress Avenue. Did you know that our chorus was founded on Monroe & South Congress? It was!
When founding Artistic Director Janey Hall decided to put together a community women’s chorus, she brought some serious Austin flair to the endeavor. First, she recruited one member, Karen, who was a friend she had met while with The Women’s Chorus of Dallas. They both missed the chorus and wanted to create something similar here in Austin.
Legend has it that Karen rented a portable amp and microphone, grabbed Janey, and they strolled over to the bustling SoCo. They set about singing, chatting, and recruiting. After one afternoon, a very memorable impromptu performance of “Bohemian Rhapsody”, a Craigslist post, and some coffee shop flyers, they had over 70 auditions for that original chorus.
So we’ll be honoring our origins by walking around and informally singing our hearts out somewhere between there and Guero’s for a bit. Times and locations can’t be guaranteed…but margaritas are definitely on the menu at some point.
