WHY THE NAME “SOCO”?
Did you know that our chorus was founded on South Congress & Monroe? When founding Artistic Director Janey Hall decided to put together a community chorus in 2012, she brought some serious Austin flair to the endeavor. First, she recruited one member, Karen, who was a friend she had met while singing with The Women’s Chorus of Dallas. They both missed the chorus and wanted to create a similar home for women and LGBTQIA+ treble singers here in Austin.
Legend has it that Karen rented a portable amp and microphone, grabbed Janey, and they strolled over to bustling SoCo. SoCo was not only a gathering place for them, but the epicenter of the Austin values of “Be Yourself” and “Keep Austin Weird” and this playful creativity and warmhearted belonging was foundational to their vision for the chorus. They set about singing, chatting, and recruiting.
After one afternoon, a very memorable impromptu performance of “Bohemian Rhapsody”, a Craigslist post, and some coffee shop flyers, they had over 70 auditions for that original chorus. And the name “SoCo” just stuck!
